Climate in Italy

Italy being a country of Southern Europe has a typical climate of its own. It varies according to the areas and the altitudes surrounding the country. The climate is of its diverse nature. Sometimes the climate differs from the Mediterranean climate. Most of the Inland areas of Italy, excepting from Turin, Milan and Bologna have continental climate which is often classed as Humid Subtropical climate. The coastal areas of Liguria and most of the peninsula south of Florence are off the Mediterranean Type which is also known as Koppen Climate Classification.

To talk about the climate in Italy, we find that the coastal areas of Liguria and most of the peninsular areas of Southern Florence are generally of the type of Mediterranean type. The coastal areas of the peninsula might differ from the slightly higher altitude areas which is located slightly interior. During the winter, the higher altitudes often become cold, wet and snowy. Italian climate always remain good. It remains chilly during winter, while during summer the climate remains warm and in the lowland areas it remains always dry.

The tourists craze to visit Italy is purely dependant upon its climatic condition. The Italy’s climate being of diverse nature and being far from the Mediterranean Climate that is why the country has the advantage of being based in a prominent center of Europe. We find that the most of the northern areas of Italy, say for example, Turin, Milan and Bologna have a continental climate. The continental climate is often classified as Humid Subtropical Climate. The Alps Mountains and Mediterranean Sea controls to a greater extend the climatic variations in Italy. Most of the areas of the country are surrounded by sea. That is why the country’s climate remains favorable all the time.



There are in all five major climatic zones in Italy. These are stated below:
  • The Alpine Zone
  • The Northern Italian Plain
  • The Coastal Tyrrhenian Area
  • The Adriatic Coast
  • The Mediterranean Zone
As regards climate in Italy, the Northern Alpine Region climate is always harsh with rain and snowfalls. During summer it striking to note the climate, it remains mild. Anyhow as already highlighted the climate in Italy is always variable.

The Northern Italian Plain or Po region has continental weather conditions with fairly cold and snowy winters. During summer the weather remains warm and mild.

The Adriatic Region has cold climate. The conditions continue to improve during summer time. The Apennine Zone has similar weather conditions but rainfall sometimes take place throughout the year except during summer.
